The word selfish often has a negative connotation. But in reality, it can be a good thing too. Everyone needs to take time for themselves and put their health before others' health.

If you don't take care of yourself, you can't take care of anyone else. Most of the time when you are selfless, you don't take into consideration what effects it will have on your own mental health.

It's okay to be selfish

Set aside the negativity surrounding the word and just focus on your own well-being.

This can allow you to get to know yourself better, be more self-confident, and even eventually help others better.


Selflessness is characterized by showing less concern for yourself than for others.

While this can be a good quality, it also can be bad for your mental health. Putting yourself after others can lower your self-esteem and make you feel like you're not as important as other people.

It's good to help others, but not at the expense of your own health. 

How To Be a Little Selfish

If you normally put others before yourself, think others are more important than you, and/or don't care for yourself as you should, start off slowly and work your way up.

Take some time out of the day to focus solely on yourself.

Write out your good qualities on a piece of paper.

When feeling socially pressured, take into consideration your needs; you don't have to do things you don't want to

Friends want you to stay out late even though you're tired and you have to be up in the morning? Learn to say no and get enough sleep so that you can be mentally prepared for the next day.
